Horse Acupuncture and its Surprising Solution For Equine Health
So, what exactly is horse acupuncture, does it work, and how can it help your horse?
As a horse owner in Australia, you know how important it is to maintain the health and wellbeing of your horse.
After all, his or her health directly impacts their performance, behaviour, and overall quality of life.
That’s why a growing number of horse owners are turning to a surprising solution: horse acupuncture.
What Is Horse Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of health conditions in humans, and probably horses as well.
The Chinese have a long association with our equine friends. It involves inserting thin needles into specific points throughout the body to stimulate qi (pronounced “chee”), or energy, flow.
By stimulating these points, the body can return to balance and promote healing.
Acupuncture for horses works much the same way as it does for humans.
Trained practitioners insert tiny needles into specific acupuncture points throughout the horse’s body, such as around the ears, along the spine, and on the legs.
The treatment is painless, and horses often react positively to it, sometimes even falling asleep during the session.
Benefits Of Acupuncture For Horses
The benefits of horse acupuncture are numerous and varied, with many horse owners reporting overall improvements in their animal’s health and behaviour.
Here are just a few of the benefits. However, it’s important to note that acupuncture should NEVER replace qualified medical treatment, particularly for things like colic!
Pain Relief
One of the most commonly reported benefits of acupuncture for horses is pain relief. Horses suffering from conditions like arthritis, muscle or joint pain, and back pain can find relief with acupuncture.
Improved Digestion
Acupuncture can help with a variety of digestive issues, such as stomach upsets (colic)**, ulcers, and diarrhoea.
By stimulating specific points throughout the digestive system, acupuncture can promote better digestion and gut health.
**Always seek medical treatment for colic.
Acupuncture may be used as a preventative i.e. improving overall gut health to help reduce the incidences of colic, but a colic attack itself is always a medical emergency. It’s also wise to have ulcers treated by a vet as well!
Stress Relief
Horses, like humans, can experience stress and anxiety, which can manifest in behaviours like cribbing, weaving, and stall pacing. Acupuncture can help relieve stress and promote relaxation in horses.
Improved Performance
Many horse owners report that acupuncture has improved their horse’s overall performance in areas like endurance, speed, and balance.
