Become the Leader Your Horse Is Hoping to Follow: Join Merja Sumiloff's Free Online Book Club

ToggleIntroduction:
What if the key to a better relationship with your horse was not a new training technique, but a deeper understanding of yourself?
That is the core question behind a free six-week equestrian personal development book club launching Sunday 31 May 2026, led by Merja Sumiloff, Australia’s only psychology-based horsemanship coach. Drawing on her course The 4 People Within®, adapted specially for equestrians, this program invites horse owners to explore the hidden inner patterns that directly shape how they show up as leaders for their horses.
If you have ever felt like your horse reads your mood before you even acknowledge it yourself, this book club was created for you.
Your Equestrian Personal Development Book Club: Session Details at a Glance
The 4 People Within® for Equestrians Book Club is a free, six-week live online program combining guided course content with personal reflection exercises. Sessions run every Sunday from 7 to 8 PM AEST (Sydney time), starting 31 May 2026.
Each week, Merja guides the group through chapters of The 4 People Within®, her course adapted specifically for equestrians, and follows each chapter with journal prompts designed to help participants connect the material to their own lives and horsemanship.
This is not a traditional book club where you read independently and then gather to discuss. Merja describes it as “a gentle round table of self discovery,” with the pace kept slow and the focus placed on listening to what comes from within.
Sessions are live and confidential. There are no recordings.
Why Does Self-Awareness Matter in Horsemanship?
Horses are highly attuned to the internal state of the people around them. They do not respond to who a rider pretends to be; they respond to who that rider actually is in any given moment.
When a rider is overthinking, suppressing emotions, tense, or internally divided, the horse notices. This shows up as resistance, spookiness, inconsistency in response, or a breakdown in trust. It is not a training problem. It is a congruence problem.
The 4 People Within® framework is built around the idea that each person carries several distinct inner facets that can sometimes work against each other. When those parts are in conflict, the horse experiences a different version of the rider from moment to moment. Horses, as Merja explains, are mirrors of who we are. They reveal us when we are not congruent, when we are overriding our emotions, or when our internal state cannot be trusted.
Developing inner alignment resolves that inconsistency at the source.
What Will You Gain From This Program?
Participants in the six-week book club can expect to develop:
– Greater self-awareness and a clearer understanding of their own decision-making patterns.
– More inner alignment between the different parts of themselves.
– Practical tools for responding rather than reacting under pressure or stress.
– Deeper emotional regulation capacity.
– Clearer, more loving boundaries, especially with a heart horse.
– Improved communication with horses, grounded in a genuine understanding of where you are coming from in any given moment.
As Merja says: “Understanding ourselves more deeply moves us from simply existing in our lives as a side character to a more intentional creator of who we are and what we want to do with our horses.”
Who Is This Book Club For?
This program is for equestrians who sense that working on themselves is just as important as working in the arena. Trail riders, competitive riders, horse lovers at any level of experience, all are welcome.
No preparation is needed before the first session. No prior experience with personal development is required. Just come as you are, bring a notebook and a pen, and you are ready.
Merja describes the community as “supportive, thoughtful, like-minded and like-hearted equestrians.”
Why Teaching Sharpens the Trainer
When I coach a rider through a brace in the reins, a horse who rushes fences, or a mare who pins her ears during saddling, I refine my own eye and timing. By articulating psychology based principles more clearly, I learn more deeply, teach more effectively, and ultimately do what I am here to do: help make the world a better place for horses and the people who love them.
In this way, every lesson becomes a mirror, not only for the student, but for me. I continue training myself even when my horses are not physically present. We all benefit from the work. This is where professional satisfaction becomes important. While income matters, it should not compromise our training – and vice versa.

No preparation is needed at all. Merja will guide participants through the chapters of The 4 People Within® during the sessions themselves. Just come as you are, bring a notebook and a pen, and you are ready to go.
No. Recordings will not be made or distributed. This is a deliberate choice to protect the personal and confidential nature of the experience and to encourage full presence from all participants..
A notebook or paper and a pen. No special equipment or software is required beyond a device to join the online session.
Yes. The program focuses on the human side of the horse and rider relationship, not riding skill or experience level. Any equestrian who wants to grow as a leader for their horse is welcome.
Because there are no recordings, attending live each week is essential to getting the full experience. If your schedule is uncertain over the six weeks, it may be worth registering for a future round.
Rather than reading independently and then discussing, each session moves through chapters of The 4 People Within® course material with guided journal prompts for personal reflection. It functions more like a structured personal development workshop within a warm group setting.
The book club is completely free. Register here.
